Marissa C de Baca
is a PhD Candidate in Cinema and Media Studies. Previously, they earned an MA in Film and Media Studies from Columbia University and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Conducting research at the intersection of Asian American studies, transpacific critique, new media theory, and queer of color critique, their dissertation examines how Asian American and Asian diasporic media and performance art rearrange national historiography and cultural memory to dismantle the afterlives and elisions of imperial, wartime, and colonial violence that were established through U.S.-Japan economic trade ties and Asian American assimilation. They are also completing a graduate certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies and serve as an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies.
