<image:caption>Yiou (Max) Yang is a first-year MA student in the USC CaMS program. Max Yang’s research explores how China’s queer community navigates socio-political landscapes. The term Ku’er, a phonetic adaptation of “queer,” captures an evolving yet contested space for queer identities in China. Max’s work examines how “queerness” functions both as a critical lens and a site of resistance, challenging entrenched hetero-patriarchal ‘normativity’ within restrictive cultural frameworks. Max holds a BFA in Photography from ArtCenter College of Design and an MS in Arts Administration from USC. Max’s academic and professional experiences reflect a commitment to bridging gaps in queer studies, particularly regarding the younger generation’s evolving expressions and experiences in China. While some scholars have explored queerness within Chinese socio-political contexts, Max’s work aims to spotlight the emerging influence of queer cultural movements like Voguing Shanghai. These cultural expressions serve as acts of resistance within a censored and conservative environment, questioning the dominant cultural narrative upheld by existing power structures. With a focus on transnational and intersectional perspectives, Max’s work also seeks to document and preserve the lived experiences and evolving identities of China’s queer communities, to present expressions of diverse identities without resorting to stereotypical or clichéd portrayals.</image:caption>

My research interests include POC filmmaking, affective atmospheres, architectural design, cultural production, and critical discourse studies. Additionally, I hypothesize that both filmmaking and policymaking are both artistic processes that can author socially significant fictions. Beyond my research, I aim to pursue a career outside of academia in either the museum sphere or film festival world.</image:caption>

She received her MA in Game Development and Research at the Cologne Game Lab (Technische Hochschule Köln) in 2021 and her BA in Film Production (Directing) and German Studies from California State University, Long Beach in 2017. She is co-founder and CEO of Achtung Autobahn Studios, a games studio specializing in social-realist games. She also was Program Manager for the BA and later MA program at the Cologne Game Lab, teaching Media Studies courses and advising thesis projects. Since 2017, she has worked as an animation artist on documentaries and campaigns for non-profits such as PBS and the ACLU. She is currently co-producing a documentary about endometriosis and is developing a multimedia installation that complicates ideologies of femininity and motherhood through stories of end-of-life care. Her developing dissertation consists of a research-led practice toward developing a “mid-apocalypse farming game,” experimenting with procedurally shifting environments and the dynamic forms that labor and leisure take on a dying planet.</image:caption>
